UNIONDALE, NY -- After surrendering a quick pinfall to begin the cross-region dual meet, Bergen Catholic won five of its next six matches en route to a 41-28 victory over St. Anthony’s at Hofstra University Sunday morning.

With the meet starting at the 152-pound weight class, the Friars looked to get off to a strong start when John Vrasidas secured a pinfall just 33 seconds into the morning to give St. Anthony’s an early 6-0 lead.

That would be the only time Bergen Catholic would trail the Long Island Catholic powerhouses.

Sophomore Johnny Sebastian helped pull the Crusaders even after the second match with a pin over Aaron Spector in 5:47. Sebastian maintained a hefty advantage throughout the entire match and looked like he was destined for a major decision victory, however was able to get Spector’s shoulders to the mat for the six points 13 seconds before the conclusion of the third period.

Michael Kruklinkski gave Bergen Catholic its first lead of the morning with a 5-2 decision over Chris Salerno in the 170 pound weight class, and Lukas Iorio dominated Peter Corbett at 182 pounds with a 15-0 techincal fall victory to give the Crusaders a 14-6 lead just four matches in.

Christian Jenco continued Bergen Catholic’s streak in quick fashion by pinning Neal Impellizeri in just 1:20 for a 20-6 Crusaders lead.

St. Anthony’s made its back onto the scoreboard in a marathon triple overtime contest at 220 pounds as Andrew Auriemma eeked out a 2-1 decision over Hunter Kiselick.

Following a Bergen Catholic forfeit victory at 285 pounds to give Bergen Catholic a huge 26-9 lead, St. Anthony’s did its best to cut into the Cruasers lead. Ben Lamantia secured a 6-3 overtime victory with a near fall in the extra frame over Tyler Casamenti at 106 pounds to cut Bergen’s lead to 26-12.

However, Bergen would clinch the team victory at 113 pounds with Troy Schaafsma’s pinfall over St. Anthony’s Freddy Dunau 1:55 into the first period. Dunau controlled the majority of the period, and held a 6-0 lead at one points. However, once Schaafsma earned an escape with 30 seconds remaining he took down the top-ranked 106-pound CHSAA wrestler in Dunau, and was able to hold him down long enough for the fall and six team points for a 32-12 lead.

JP Ascolese and Charlie Mitchell both earned decision victories over St. Anthony’s in 120 and 138 pounds respectively, while Jamel Hudson, Sam Ward, and Matt Szilagyi earned wins in their respective matches for St. Anthony’s.
