Dix Hills, NY – Senior Day tends to be a bittersweet day for any team as the program recognizes the years of service and loyalty. However, with all the heavy emotion, there was still a game to be played, and by no surprise it was the Half Hollow Hills East seniors that led the way. Senior Jake Freeman and Robby Reiser scored the first two goals of the game as the Thunderbirds knocked off Lindenhurst, 4-0, at Tom Collins/Chris Panatier 9/11 Memorial Stadium.
Hills East coming into Tuesday’s game held a record of 10-0-1 in League II, good enough for first place, while Lindenhurst entered with a record of 1-9-1. Despite the difference in record, both teams still had a lot to play for in this one. With the win, Hills East moved one step closer to the number one seed in the playoffs, as for Lindenhurst they were looking to avenge a 5-0 loss to the Thunderbirds earlier in the season.
Jake Freeman shined in this one as he scored 14 minutes into the game off a hard strike that went off the hands of Lindenhurst keeper James Brostowski and into the net. Freeman, the recently committed Harvard-bound senior, netted his 13th goal of the season to make it 1-0 heading into halftime.
Hills East dominated many of the first half offensive possessions, and in the second half it was a lot more of the same.
Merely 1:36 into the half, Senior Robby Reiser found the back of the net off a quick throw-in deep in Bulldog territory that surprised the defense. That goal made it a quick 2-0 lead, but the offense wasn’t through just yet. This time the offense of the Thunderbirds would shift to a junior. In a span of two minutes, Tyler Kirschner was successful in completing back-to-back breakaways, the latter capping the scoring at 4-0.
With the Senior Day clean sheet by Senior Jordan Gross, Hills East moves to 11-0-1 in League II and 13-1-1 overall.
