2017 ALL-NEW YORK CITY BASEBALL SECOND TEAM

 

CATCHER

 

JERRY HUNTZINGER

Monsignor Farrell- committed to Seton Hall 

 

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound catcher was a good signal caller and had a strong arm in his third year starting on the varsity. Huntzinger batted .326 with was second on the team with 27 RBI’s and had seven doubles. 

 

 

INFIELD

 

DANIEL ALFONZO

Bayside-committed to Adelphi University

 

The senior infielder helped the 2016 PSAL AA champions have a smooth transition into the AAA division with a second round playoff appearance. Alfonzo hit .471 with 3 home runs, 16 RBI’s, 6 doubles and a.804 slugging percentage and was drafted by the New York Mets, who his father Edgardo played for, in the 38th round of the MLB draft.

 

RYAN O’HAGEN (Junior)

Holy Cross 

 

The junior first baseman was a steady presence by starting every game this season for the Knights while making only one error. O’Hagan hit. 359 this season with 15 RBI’s, had 18 runs along with a .425 on base percentage. 

 

CHRISTIAN HERNANDEZ

Gregorio Luperon

 

The Generals made its first appearance in the PSAL Class AAA semifinals with the help of this all-around senior as he hit a team leading .512 batting average with 11 RBI’s, 17 walks, 14 stolen bases and had an OPS of 1.40. 

 

KEURY ABREU (Junior)

St. Raymond 

 

The Ravens relied on the third baseman to help the offense with a .300 batting average with 14 RBI’s, 3 doubles and struck out only five times this season. He also went 5-1 on the mound with a 1.50 ERA and struck out 53 batters in 46 innings pitched.

 

OUTFIELD

 

JOHN HERRING

Archbishop Molloy- committed to University of Massachusetts

 

The lefty-swinging 6-foot-3, 230-pound senior sprayed the ball to all fields and finished this season with a .317 batting average with 17 RBI’s and 21 stolen bases.

 

JASON APOSTLE

Fordham Prep- committed to Cornell University

 

The Rams was one of the highest scoring teams in the CHSAA Class AA division as he batted .368 this season with six doubles, five triples, 17 RBI’s and 26 runs scored. Apostle was a strong fielding outfielder who only recorded 1 error this season. 

 

HAYDEN GUMB

Monsignor Farrell 

 

The speedy leadoff hitter rebounded offensively to kick start the Lions offense with .378 batting average, which was good for second on the team, and scored 30 runs. 

 

DESIGNATED HITTER 

 

ANGEL PRESINAL ALMANZAR

George Washington

 

The Trojans senior outfielder made a quick impact in his first year on the varsity by leading his team with a .439 batting average while using his speed for a perfect 16-for-16 stolen bases and had 4 triples. Almanzar also became a run producer with 25 RBI’s.

 

UTILITY 

 

FREDDY ROJAS

James Monroe Campus- committed to Hillsborough College

 

The versatile lefty hitter infielder/outfielder was a steady presence in the middle of the lineup with a.395 average, 3 home runs, 24 RBI’s, while walking 18 times and striking out only 8 times in 55 league at bats. 

 

PITCHER 

 

ALAN SOROKIN

Midwood 

 

The Hornets right handed pitcher took the reins to become a consistent start all season to help his team win the PSAL AAA Southeastern crown with a  6-1 record, 1.56 ERA while striking out 36 batters and allowing only 8 earned runs. 

 

NICHOLAS METZGER (Junior)

Tottenville 

 

Another Pirates player that made a smooth transition into his first year on the varsity, Metzger mixed a number of pitches to record n 8-0 season with a 0.38 ERA while striking out 30 batters. 

 

FRANK CAMPANELLI

Telecommunications 

 

The hard-throwing left-handed starter was one of the reasons why the No. 14 seed Yellowjackets made a Cinderella run to the PSAL Class AAA semifinals. Campanelli finished with a 6-3 record, 3 saves, 1.47 ERA along with 65 strikeouts in 54 innings. 

 

NICK DESALVO

Xaverian- committed to LIU-Brooklyn

 

The LIU-Brooklyn commit returned from an early season injury to lead the CHSAA AA Brooklyn/Queens regular season champions with a 8-2 record, struck out 72 batters in 59.1 innings pitched along with a 1.65 ERA. 

 

WILLIAM GILBERT

Beacon (Junior)

 

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior had a strong season on the mound with a 6-0 record and a 0.41 ERA along with recording 69 strikeouts in only 40.2 innings pitched. Gilbert also had a .362 batting average and drove in 16 RBI’s.
