The CHSAA Class AA baseball playoffs began on May 17 with 18 teams invited to the tournament. After a week and half of one-game eliminations and a separate seeding round, the CHSAA has finally cut the number to eight teams which began the Intersectional double-elimination tournament on Wednesday.
St. Joseph by-the-Sea earned the top seed and continued its winning ways by defeating No.8 seed Iona Prep, 1-0, at the College of Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon. Chris Villa drove in Steve Withers with the only run in the sixth inning and Vikings pitcher Angelo Navetta pitched a complete game and struck out 9 Gaels batters.
Molloy, who previously lost to Sea 4-3 in 9 innings on Sunday in the battle for the top seed, rebounded on Wednesday. The No. 2 seed Stanners earned an 8-1 home win over St. Francis Prep to send the Terriers to the loser’s bracket of the tournament.
On Thursday, two-more opening round games get underway as third seed Fordham Prep takes on Bronx-Westchester rivals Salesian, the No. 6 seed, at Kennedy Catholic High School at 4:30 p.m. No. 4 seed Kennedy Catholic battles No. 5 seed Xaverian at Manhttanville College at 4:30 p.m.
The four winning teams will play on Friday in the winner’s portion of the Intersectional bracket. St. Francis Prep and Iona Prep will try to avoid elimination against the two losing teams on Thursday in the loser’s portion of the bracket on Friday.
The CHSAA Class AA and Class A championship are scheduled to be played on June 6 at MCU Park.
