Xaverian is announcing that senior running back Laray Smith has committed to Indiana University.  Smith has been offered an athletic scholarship for football, and will also run track for the Hoosiers.
Smith, a two time CHSFL all star, has been a three-year standout on the gridiron for Xaverian and was selected to play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl sponsored by the United States Marine Corps in January.  Smith was also named a Junior All-American for his prowess in the 200M dash, and was recruited in both football and track by such schools as Syracuse, Connecticut, Tennessee, Mississippi and Oregon.
“I visited Syracuse University and the University of Connecticut and they were both good," Smith said. "I’ve never been to Indiana, so when I went there it was a very different experience.  I want to be on a campus and at a school where, when football is over, it’s a place I can be comfortable and be involved with other sports.  Sports don’t last forever and Indiana University offers a great education.  It’s one of the top schools in the country, so I know when I graduate from IU, I’ll be able to have a solid career.  They have a great football team.  They’re just missing a couple of playmakers, and I hope I can be one of those playmakers and help the team continue to improve and be one of the best in the Big Ten.”
Smith reflected on his time at Xaverian, saying, “I’m going to miss Xaverian.  I’m going to miss the teachers, especially [Director of Athletics] Mr. Mancusi, because he’s been like a second dad to me.  A lot of people have helped me succeed here.  Xaverian has taught me how to be a man and I’ve gotten a great education.  Xaverian has prepared me for college.  I know college will be a lot harder, but Xaverian has prepared me to balance academics and sports.  School always comes first here because, if you don’t have the grades, you’re not going to be able to play.”
