Central downs Bassick, earns 1st victory

Bridgeport - In a game that looked like a wild west shootout, the Hilltoppers of Bridgeport Central outscored Bassick 38-24 to earn thier first victory of the season and more importantly, continued thier dominance over the Lions that dates back to the early 1990's. Central Quarterback Xavier Hardison returned to the lineup this morning. After missing multiple games from a concussion, he entered the game and led Central in a shootout throwing for 148 yards and added a touchdown of his own.

Bassick came out flying first when Vochan Fowler threw to Tyreik Gilbert in stride for an 88 yard touchdown score. Fowler, would call his own number scoring the 2 point conversion. Central Quarterback Xavier Hardison returned to the lineup this morning. After missing multiple games from a concussion, he entered the game and would make it a tied game after hadning off to Andrew Louis who made a dive into the endzone. Hardison would brings home the extra 2. The ensuing kickoff would see Bassick's Jihad Whittaker return the ball 80 yards for a touchdown.

Central responded again with a 5 minute, 92 yard drive resulting in a Mykel Morris touchdown from 4 yards out. Hardison would again call his own number and get the bouns points. That led to a 16 all tie heading into halftime.

The Lions would have the ball back and would turn it over when Julian Fyffe would fumble the ball in the middle of a 13 yard drive, in a play that would be Central's second forced turnover. The hilltoppers would take over on Bassick's 47 yard line. Hardison would sperad the love, distributing the ball to Andrew Louis, Keyshaun Thomas and Mykel Morris who would score a 34 yard touchdown with 8:17 to go in the 3rd. Hardison would again go to Thomas to convert on the extra 2 points to give Central its first lead of the game.

Bassick's Vochan Fowler would continue to connect with Tyreik Gilbert driving down the field from thier own 35 yard line and then calling his own number on a 9 yard run with under 6 to play. The game's 6 2 point conversion attempt would be successfull, and Bassick would tie Central at 24. Both teams would go on to have 4 and out drives before Central would find more offense.

Mykel Morris and Xavier Hardison would combine for a 63 yard, 2 minute drive the resulted in the duo running right into the endzone and giving Central yet another lead of the game with about 2 minutes to play in the quarter.  The Hilltopper defense would lock up thier lead, blocking passes and maintaining tight coverage on Jihad Whittaker. Marcus Moss would add an interception on a Fowler pass with 6 minutes to go.

For Central, the win marked the first of the season and 16th consecutive win over Bassick, Central also has recorded 12 wins against fellow Bridgeport school, Harding. Finally victorious, Central will take the momentum into a week 6 matchup with Greenwich at Cardinal Stadium. Bassick will look to translate thier offensive successes into a win against thier other city rival Warren Harding.
