Seaford crowned Nassau 'B' VB champs

Top-seeded Seaford admittedly had a case of nerves in the hours leading up to Thursday night's Nassau Class B girls volleyball championship at SUNY-Old Westbury.

The Vikings got rid of those butterflies just in time to beat No. 3 Floral Park, 3-0, to win the county title.

"They were a little nervous in the beginning," Seaford coach Marie Savage said. "They weren't hitting as much as I wanted them to, but they came around later on."

Seaford took Game 1, 25-16, thanks to a solid service game from senior Megan Sullivan, who paced the Vikings with four aces.

The Vikings took the next two games, 25-18 and 25-20, but were put to the test as the team faced early deficits in both games. Senior setter Meaghan Curley, who had four kills and 13 assists, attributed Seaford's win to its all-around play.

"It was our defense, our covering, moving our feet and picking up scrappy balls all over the court and capitalizing on their mistakes," Curley said.

The Vikings got strong efforts from several players, including sophomore middle hitter Jessica Rini, who had seven kills and five blocks, and Megan Russell, who added seven kills.

Seaford (16-0) will face Glenn in the Long Island Class B championship at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at St. Joseph's (L.I.) in Patchogue.
