This week in art class at The Bridge Academy, Ms. Phiri’s seventh-grade students finished their clay pottery and began painting. Students worked on their pottery using the coil pot technique for a few weeks. Each student began their work with a base shape of their choice. Each student created something unique using the same techniques.

Students learned how to properly use clay tools and how thick to roll a base. Next the students created a design plan for their vessel. The students learned to roll coils, score and blend. They also learned to control the direction of the coils thus making the vessel form wide, straight up or in towards the center. Students learned how to add on small sculptural pieces and carve into the surface of their vessel to further make it their own.

This week students will now be able to add paint to the surface of their air-dry clay vessels. Students are very excited to begin painting, and resulting pictures will be posted for viewing on the MSG Varsity website.
