Diallo, Our Savior New American too much for Linden

Our Savior New American  of Long Island has McDonald's All-American Cheick Diallo at center.

Undersized Linden does not have a center.

And therein lied the overwhelming difference between these two teams Friday night at Kean University. The 6-9 Diallo scored 23 points and hauled in 12 rebounds to send the Pioneers to a 67-55 win over Linden at the Metro Classic in Union.

Our Savior improved to 13-5 just five days after losing to Pope John, 64-61, at the Prime Time Shootout in nearby Roselle. Linden (15-5), No. 4 in the MSGVarsity Tri-State Top 20, squares off with No. 12 Pope John Sunday at the Tri-State Hoopfest at Roselle Catholic.

"McDonald's All-American center beats Linden's no- center. That should be the headline of the game," Linden head coach Phil Colicchio said. "They're big and athletic, a little more like (third-ranked) St. Pat's than any other big team we've played. Their bigs really run and they go after every shot, they try to block every shot."

Well, the Pioneers blocked nine of them between Diallo (three), 6-7 junior Kassoum Yakwe (five) and 6-8 Mamadou Docoure, recorded eight dunks and they outrebounded Linden, 39-25. The Tigers created shot opportunities around the cylinder--a lot, in fact--but risked rejection every time they made a visit.

"What we had to do was take the extra dribble and kick it out, but you can't change everything for one game," Colicchio said. "What we did against them usually works. And we didn't hit our threes. If we  can get some of those, it's probably a different game."

Senior point guard Otis Livingston scored 16 points and had seven assists and senior guard Josh Carter came up with 15 points and three steals for Linden. Djibril Diallo scored 10 points to help OSNA.

Linden was able to offset its size disadvantage with quickness and scrappy defense to forge an 11-4 lead with 5:34 to play in the first quarter. But the Pioneers extended the floor, worked some turnovers and got the ball to the big men underneath. That 11-4 deficit was quickly a 14-13 lead after one quarter and 36-22 by the half.

"I told  my kids I thought we lost the game in the first five minutes," Colicchio said. "We're up 11-4 and we had four bad offensive possessions in a row because we were rushing. We got our lead based on adrenalin and then we kept trying to play that way. That's when we should have slowed it down, moved the ball, mad them work. But we got impatient."

Cheick Diallo connected for 14  of his 23 points in the second quarter, most of them on low post feeds or putbacks, which cut right into Linden's main shortcoming.

"We're stepping out there to help and the ball's over our heads for alley-oop dunks," Colicchio said. "There's no way we can stop that."
