Elizabeth QB Walker chooses Temple

Elizabeth quarterback P.J. Walker verbally committed to Temple University, reports MSG Varsity football analyst Steve Levy.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Walker threw for 2,168 yards and 18 touchdowns as junior for the Minutemen, who fell to Piscataway in the North 2 Group 4 championship game last December.

Walker chose the Owls over UConn, Rutgers, Toledo, East Carolina and Nebraska, according to his coach, John Quinn.

"He's been instrumental to our team turning it around and helping us reach a state final," Quinn said by phone on Friday afternoon. "It wouldn't have been possible without him. He's a hard-working, gifted athlete, a solid character and a real pleasure to coach."

Quinn went on to express how he thinks Walker, a 2012 MSG Varsity New Jersey Football Player of the Year candidate, will further improve as a leader this coming fall.

"Absolutely. What we accomplished last year, getting back into the playoffs, was very significant," Quinn said. "Ultimately we'd like to take the next step."

Walker recently competed in the MSG Varsity Tri-State QB Showdown at New Rochelle (N.Y.) High School, featuring the top 25 signal-callers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

"P.J. is one of my favorite quarterbacks in the tri-state," said Levy, who was a quarterback at Don Bosco Prep and the University of California. "We were so impressed with his ability to lead his team down the field. He's probably got the strongest arm in the state and he fits perfectly at Temple and what they do offensively.

"He's a high-character kid, and we were pleased to have him at our quarterback showcase. He impressed us all."
