Perhaps the shock of 2017 came early in Connecticut. St. Joseph dealt four-time state champion New Canaan a 38-35 defeat on the road. It was the first loss for New Canaan against a team other than Darien. Senior quarterback Sean Hopkins rushed for two of his three touchdowns in the second half to help the Cardinals pull away from a tie game for a 41-21 victory over Mahwah, the team that beat them last year in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 final. Boston College-bound quarterback Matthew Valecce threw for 296 yardsand completed two touchdowns to Will Loffredo to help the Rams defeat host St. Joseph by-the-Sea, 28-12.
