Defense helps Paramus blank Fair Lawn

Though the Paramus offense has been spectacular at times this season, its defense has been even better lately.

Chris Durante and Brandon Sebahie each scored two touchdowns and Paramus used another lock-down defensive effort to blank Fair Lawn, 48-0, on Saturday afternoon.

"Our big focus was developing a defensive mindset," Paramus coach Dan Sabella said. "We've made great strides in that area. It's something we're proud of."

Durante started the scoring by catching a 5-yard touchdown pass 52 seconds into the second quarter, and that's all the Spartans would need, as they recorded a shutout for the second straight week. They stopped Hackensack, 22-0, in Week 6.

Tyler Garguilo, Joe Rizzitello and Zack Smith also scored for Paramus, which improved to 4-2 on the season. Josh Rollins and Darius House each notched interceptions on defense.

"We knew they'd respect the deep ball, so we had them with the run game," Garguilo said. "The line was moving people, and our defense was also key."

Meanwhile, Fair Lawn fell to 1-5 one week after registering its first triumph of the season, edging Clifton, 13-12.

Garguilo doubled the advantage to 14-0 with 4;35 to go in the second, when he hauled in a 45-yard scoring strike. Durante sent Paramus into the locker room at halftime with 21-point cushion by scampering into the end zone from 17 yards out three minutes later.

Paramus kept the pressure on, scoring four more times in the third. Sebahie ran one in from 24 yards out, Rizzitello caught a 21-yard touchdown and Sebahie struck again for a highlight-reel, 75-yard scoring run in a matter of six minutes.

Smith sealed the victory with a 30-yard run with 33 seconds remaining in the third. Still, it was the team's defense that shined the brightest.

"If we keep putting zeroes on the board, it means we're going to win," Garguilo said. "We want to try to get a home game in the playoffs."
