Last Thursday night, HAFTR hosted their annual Scott Satran Memorial Basketball Tournament, in which DRS emerged victorious.
The eight-team tournament started on January 5, when DRS defeated the JEC Thunder in the first game. The leading scorers for that game were Mitchell Blitman, with 19 points, and Captain Yisrael Goldberg, with 17 points.
On Friday morning, the Wildcats easily beat the HANC Hurricanes in a strong team effort. On Saturday night, the closest preliminary round game took place when DRS squeezed out a four-point victory over Shaarei Torah. Point guard Josh Kaufman scored the last eight points. This led to DRS 3-0 record in the preliminary rounds.
DRS would go on to face the North Shore Stars in the semifinals. DRS got out to a very strong start, leading by 11 at halftime. In the second half, North Shore came back to tie the game, but strong defense, and timely foul shooting by Captain Zev Miller, and all-star forward Yoel Schreier sealed the win for the Wildcats. This led to the championship game against the 18-0 SAR Sting.
After a low scoring first half, in which DRS found itself down by six points at halftime, they came out firing in the second half. Yisrael Goldberg hit five three-pointers in the second half, and Zev Miller once again closed the game with foul-shooting. A strong return bolstered by Shimmy Steinmetz also helped lead to the championship win, despite a shoulder injury. The final score was 47-44 in favor of the Wildcats.
Mitch Blitman and Yoel Schreier took home Tier 1 All Star Awards, and Yisrael Goldberg was awarded MVP of the tournament. Most importantly, the tournament was a great bonding experience, and the team displayed great sportsmanship and middos throughout.
