It’s always baseball season on Long Island and after a stellar 2017 season there’s a lot to look forward to in the spring of 2018.

What are some of the top storylines and who are the top returning players? Eddie G lets us know.

       1)    Repeat After Me, Times Three

In the NSCHSAA, Kellenberg rode a ridiculous pitching staff to go wire-to-wire to win a second straight title, while Wantagh bounced back from a regular season struggle to capture a second consecutive Long Island championship. Can they reign again next spring? The Firebirds do return one of the Island’s top pitching prospects in Jason Diaz, who excelled in his first season of varsity ball. Meanwhile, Wantagh has a Hofstra-bound rising senior returning in shortstop Anthony D’Onofrio who is arguably the best leadoff hitter on Long Island.

2)    Is West Islip the favorite in Suffolk AA with a healthy Jake Guercio?

There might not be a tougher championship to win in the entire tri-state than Suffolk AA and the Lions reached the finals for a second straight year before falling to Commack in a best-of-three series. Guercio, the Fordham-bound rising senior outfielder, missed the majority of the season with a torn ACL. A three-year starter, Guercio will be back with a vengeance and will certainly put West Islip in contention for a crown it won two years ago.

3)    Can Brock Murtha win the Yaz as a sophomore?

As a freshman, Murtha earned All-Long Island first team honors by News 12 Varsity because he absolutely crushed the ball. The Sayville smasher led all of Long Island with 10 home runs last year and was named League VI MVP. If he continues to improve, Murtha might be the most feared bat on Long Island next year.

Who are some of the top returning players on Long Island? Lets start on the bump with Jason Diaz, who dominated in his first year of varsity ball. The Miami-bound rising junior was 5-1 with a 0.53 earned run average and went the distance in a 1-0 win over St. John the Baptist to clinch the NSCHSAA title.

Like Diaz, Wantagh’s Anthony Fontana was named first team All-Long Island by News 12 Varsity. The tough-as-nails rising senior lefthander lifted the Warriors to a 4-2 win over Shoreham-Wading River in the Long Island Class A title game and helped Wantagh get back to the NYS ‘A’ final after beating Sutherland, 5-1.

Massapequa’s Nick Collins also returns after going 5-1 with a 0.30 ERA in 46.1 innings and allowing just two earned runs his entire junior season. The first team All-Long Island selection picked up wins over Plainview JFK in the Nassau Class AA finals and Commack in the Long Island ‘AA’ final.

Another first team All-Long Island selection returning is Mark Faello from Plainview JFK. The rising senior second baseman, who verbally committed to Hofstra, hit .372 with an on-base percentage of .450 with two home runs, 23 RBIs and 22 runs scored and earned the Diamond Award as Nassau’s top pitcher.
