Holy Trinity to perform Guys and Dolls

Hicksville, NY– When the Holy Trinity Performing Arts Department considers what musical to perform, they always refer to their long list of previous shows.  The school will perform Damon Runyon’s “Guys & Dolls” for the first time in its 45 year history.
Director and Theatre teacher, Christopher Tramantana, who is also a 1996 graduate of Holy Trinity reflects on the show. “Performing an old classic like ‘Guys & Dolls’ is a challenge,” he said. “I need to help them understand the show and relate it to today’s social atmosphere. These classics tended to be long, so the challenge for the students is to keep their energy level up to the last note. The audience will be in for a great show… we have some surprises in store.”

The annual spring musical is a huge undertaking which begins in early December with auditions.  On average 100 students audition for the musical and depending upon the show, anywhere from 30 to over 60 can be cast in an on-stage role.  Additionally, students are involved in all aspects of the production: costuming, lighting, sound, set design and construction, marketing, stage management, assistants to the director, choreographer and musical director, as well as the pit orchestra.  For this year’s production, there are over 100 students and 14 faculty/staff members involved.

Rehearsals began in mid-January and were held three times a week after school.  As show week approaches, rehearsals get more intense, and the weekend before the show, referred to as “tech weekend,” the hours are long as lighting cues, sound cues and set changes are the main focus.  Regardless of the long hours and rehearsal time, students are expected to remain focused on their school work. “Academics always come first,” said Performing Arts chairperson, Mrs. Catherine Murphy.

Holy Trinity’s production of “Guys & Dolls” will be presented on May 3, 4, & 5 at 7:30pm.  Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.  Call 516-433-2900 x146 for details.
