Jericho’s 2012 Homecoming weekend was postponed due to rain, but that did not stop captains Zach Cohen, Derek Medolla, Harrison Rieber, David Orr, and Ari Lewis from leading Jericho’s varsity soccer team to a victory against Wheatley on Saturday, September 29.
The team won a 4-0 effort with contributions from all members of the squad, including second year member junior defensemen Rob Busam.
“It was a strong win and it shows the true strength and depth of the team,” Busam said.
Jericho won with goals by Derek Medolla, David Orr, David Greenbaum, and Josh Yardeni, which were made possible by assists from seniors Josh Yardeni, Zach Cohen, and Alex Genatt. The team’s fruitful efforts were backed by yet another large turnout from the Jericho community.
“The support from the crowd was great,” Busam said. “The team knows the crowd is a major factor, especially against a tough opponent like Wheatley.”
On the defensive side, goalies Ari Lewis and Reed Ginsberg combined for six key saves for the defensive shutout.
Led by coaches Dani Braga and James Whelan, Jericho’s soccer team is now recognized on the national soccer map due to its win at states last year.
On Homecoming weekend, the team was 6-0-1 and looking forward to continuing its victorious results. “Our main focus right now is finishing the season in first place, but we all have states in the back of our minds,” Busam said.
The team’s main goal of the season was to achieve a back-to-back victory at the New York State Championship game, and they succeeded against Port Chester. With goals by Zach Cohen and Ajani Motta, the game ended 2-1, granting the Jayhawks their second state title for the Class A division.
