Live game primer: MacArthur at Baldwin girls hoops

The MacArthur Lady Generals will travel to Baldwin tonight to meet up with the Lady Bruins in a primetime Nassau Conference AA-II girls basketball contest. MSGVarsity.com live access will have all of the action beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Taking a look at the last time these two met up, MacArthur (10-0, 13-2, first in Conference AA-II) was pushed to the brink by Baldwin (9-1, 11-3, second in Conference AA-II) in a 59-55 victory on January 15. Jena Cozza led the Generals with a game-high 24 points while Courtney Noakes added 12 points in the victory.

Since then, the Lady Generals have remained perfect in Conference AA-II including wins over Port Washington, East Meadow, Hicksville, and Valley Stream Central. Not only have the Lady Generals been perfect, they have done it in convincing fashion as well. All of their victories have been over double-digits, with the closest being a 14-point win over Valley Stream Central.

As for Baldwin, they too have been on a hot streak of sorts. Since taking the loss on the road at MacArthur, the Lady Bruins have gone undefeated. Baldwin has taken care of East Meadow, Hicksville, Harry S. Truman (Bronx), Valley Stream Central, and Plainview-JFK. Baldwin much like MacArthur have been easily in control of each mostly every win. The Lady Bruins have beaten their opponent by an average of 27.2 points per win.

Taking an in depth look at MacArthur, the Lady Generals are led by a pair of terrific scorers in Jena Cozza and Courtney Noakes. Cozza has averaged 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this season, while Noakes scores at nearly a 12 points per game clip this season. However, this is not a two-girl show, Jen Gubell is a solid three-point threat, and Stephanie Volpe is tough on the boards on both sides of the ball.

On the flip side, the Lady Bruins are built a bit differently than MacArthur. There is no main scorer, instead there are a bunch. Tyra Harrison leads the way with averaging 8.5 points per game, however Mariah Butler (7.2), Jade Aponte (6.9), Chelsea May (6.7), and Tiara Place (6.3) chip in mightily on a daily basis to the Baldwin offense.

The importance of this game could not be greater. A win for MacArthur would clinch the Conference AA-II title. So be sure to check out all of the action with Barry Landers on the call tonight starting at 7:00 p.m. This game will premiere on MSG Varsity Optimum. Channel 14 on Thursday, February 14 at 9:30 p.m.
