Welcome to MSGVarsity.com's Memorable Mondays, a summer-long series that looks back on the top players, games and moments from the past season and gazes ahead to 2012-13. As the summer goes on, we'll compile all the lists and post them here: www.msgvarsity.com/mondays. New lists will be posted every Monday at noon.
In Week 1 of Memorable Mondays, we look at five of the best graduating seniors from Long Island high schools.
Stacey Bedell, football, William Floyd: "This is Stacey Bedell." The William Floyd RB never ceased to amaze every time he stepped foot on the gridiron. He amassed an astounding 2,532 rushing yards and scored 39 touchdowns in his senior year alone. Bedell, the co-winner of the Hansen Award, capped off his senior year by being named the MVP at the UnitedHealthcare Empire Challenge with 135 rushing yards and scoring 3 touchdowns.
Alexandra Bruno, girls lacrosse, Garden City: Alexandra Bruno continued to lead Garden City's dominance in New York State by helping her Trojans to their seventh straight Class B championship. Her 93 goals and 41 assists were good for 134 points, which was second most on Long Island this year. She will continue her lacrosse career next spring at Princeton University.
Devin Dwyer, boys lacrosse, Garden City: The Harvard-bound attack was the quarterback of the national boys lacrosse champions. His 39 goals and 75 assists were good for a Long Island-best 114 points on the year and helped lead the Garden City boys to its first NYS championship since 2000.
Jamel Hudson, wrestling, St. Anthony's: The multi-talented Hudson dominated the New York State wrestling championships by becoming only the fourth Catholic League grappler to win a state title. Along with a state title, Hudson was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tourney and set a NYS championship record for the shortest pin in a match - 8 seconds.
Brianna Nerud, track, North Shore: Nerud has dominated the track both inside and outside this past year. During the winter season, Nerud won the Nassau 'B' title in the 600 and 1000, finished second in the 1,500 at states, and third in the mile at nationals.
