The Tigers' prowl will continue to Cortland. And that's dangerous for foes with players like Kristin Desmond and Natasha Albaneze on the attack.

Desmond scored two goals and Albaneze one as Northport defeated Massapequa 3-1 in the Class AA girls soccer Long Island championship Tuesday night at Dowling Sports Complex.

Albaneze opened the scoring in the 10th minute, knocking in a deflection off a cross from Cortney Fortunato. Desmond scored on a direct kick from the top of the box to make it 2-0 Northport with 6:20 remaining in the half.

We felt like this was the year," Albaneze said. "We are a force to be reckoned with."

Erica Modena made a beautiful chip pass near the top of the box to set up a breakaway for Rosie DiMartino, who scored to bring Massapequa (14-4-1) within 2-1 with 12:33 remaining.

But Desmond charged in on a free kick from midfield that got behind the defense and knocked in the loose ball to make it 3-1 with 9:42 left. Keeper Jessica Rom made nine saves to seal the win.

Northport (17-1-2) advances to the state semifinals at Homer High School in Cortland at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

"We said this was our year," Desmond said. "We're going to go all the way and hopefully we do. We're right there."
