Sachem East takes League II crown

There was a lot on the line in Wednesday night's wrestling match between Suffolk League II heavyweights Sachem East and Connetquot.

The most important aspect was the league championship. Next was momentum heading into the postseason.

Sachem East took control early and finished strongly to knock off host Connetquot, 46-25, in front of a packed house to win the League II title.

Starting at 138 pounds and moving up, Sachem East took the first four matches and led 16-0.

"It was very important for us to get those early matches," said Sachem East junior Zac Nobre. "We're stronger in the upper weights and winning at the upper weights is what got us the win."

Sachem East (6-0) was on a roll as Mark Tracy (160) defeated Chris Beal in the fourth match of the day, 8-2, to give his team the 16-0 lead.

Connetquot (5-1) got on the board in the next match at 170 pounds when Shaun Gillen pinned A.J. Solomito with 1:12 left in the first period.

But Sachem East regained control in the ensuing 182-pound match thanks to Nobre, who pinned Nick Marcinek in 2:04. The Flaming Arrows got another pin in the next match at 195 by John Vigh, who stopped Frank Morelli with 10 seconds left in the first period.

"All of our heavyweights came together and we did well," Vigh said.

Sachem East coach Sean O'Hara was pleased with his team's ability to stay in control in a touch environment.

"We felt like the way we started out worked in our favor because it was the really strong part of our lineup," O'Hara said.

The Flaming Arrows are happy with the win, but know the postseason lies ahead.

"We have work to do," O'Hara said. "I think we need to realize we won the battle, but we have to improve and we have to get ready for the war, which is coming up in the next couple of weeks with the leagues and the counties."
