Gibson Award goes to Mount Sinai’s Kessler

Kessler used his high-octane fastball and wipeout slider to keep batters uneasy during a historic season for the Mustangs, who won the Long Island Class A championship for the first time. The big righthander went 8-3 with a 0.39 ERA en route to being named the 2016 Paul Gibson Award winner.

Anthony Catapano wins Nassau’s Diamond Award

After winning the Martone Award in December for Nassau’s best lineman, Catapano can add another trophy to his mantle. Wednesday night he earned the Diamond Award for the top baseball position player in Nassau at the all-star banquet at the Uniondale Marriott after being nominated for the honor last year.

Oceanside’s Martin wins Diamond Pitching Award

After an offseason of strenuous training, Martin capped his high school baseball career with the highest honor in Nassau. In addition to earning a third Conference AA-I MVP, the senior shortstop and pitcher received the Diamond Pitching Award at the county’s all-star banquet Wednesday night at the Uniondale Marriott.

Smithtown’s Grande takes home Silver Slugger

The senior shortstop led Smithtown West to a share of the Suffolk League III title with crosstown neighbor Smithtown East. And he led the Bulls with a .522 batting average, 35 hits, 27 runs scored, 23 RBIs and a .641 on base percentage. He finished his high school career with 111 hits in his five-year career.

Brian Morrell of SWR wins Yastrzemski Award

For his accomplishments, Morrell became only the fourth junior in 49 years to earn the prestigious Carl Yastrzemski Award, given to Suffolk’s top player. The award, which is voted on by the Suffolk County Baseball Coaches Association, was presented at last night’s All-County banquet. He is the first junior to earn the award since Patchogue-Medford’s Marcus Stroman, who plays for the Toronto Blue Jays, in 2008.

Rooney named MVP as Suffolk wins all-star game

Bay Shore righty Brian Weissert put the finishing touch on a masterpiece. Nine Suffolk pitchers shut out the Nassau senior all-stars, 1-0, Tuesday night at the 12th annual Rawlings Grand Slam Challenge at Farmingdale State College.
