Floral Park, NY – Something had to give.
Coming into Tuesday’s match-up between the Floral Park Knights and New Hyde Park Gladiators, both teams were on rolling. New Hyde Park brought their perfect 6-0 record on the road, but left Floral Park High School with their first loss of the season.
Behind a five-goal effort from junior Jocelyn Penteck, the Knights knocked off the Gladiators, 10-9, in an extremely hard fought Conference B-II affair.
Penteck got it going early for her squad.
With the score knotted at one in the first half, the outstanding junior put home two-straight goals to give Floral Park (6-1, 5-0 conference) back the lead. Then it was New Hyde Park (6-1, 5-1 conference) that went on a run of their own. Three consecutive goals by Jillian Graziano, Kristen Korzevinski, and Madison Cascio respectively gave the Gladiators their first lead of the game.
However, right before the half was complete, Penteck had the answer. A quick move and good ball placement gave her the hat trick, but more importantly a tie ball game heading into the second half.
Much like the first half, the action swayed from squad to squad throughout the whole 25 minutes.
NHP got back on the board first, but Floral Park’s Jessica McAllister scored 21 seconds later off the draw control. Hannah Schlecter then got in on the fun for FP, her third of the season was immediately followed by another goal for New Hyde Park, this time from Kristen Lynch who ended up tallying a hat trick in the game.
The Knights finally were able to expand their lead to two goals with 19:04 remaining as guess who, Jocelyn Penteck showed up again. Goal number four of the afternoon made it 8-6. That two-goal cushion was enough to allow Floral Park some breathing room despite these two teams trading goals the rest of the way.
The most important moment of the game happened with 5:05 remaining. Floral Park up 9-8 and looking to put it away, they were able to put the ball in the stick of their star player. Penteck tallied her fifth of the game and tenth of the week to go up for good and the Knights would hold to win their sixth in a row.
