Prep, Notre Dame, Watertown reach semis

It was quite a night Monday for four boys basketball teams from the Connecticut Region who joined Kolbe Cathedral, a quarterfinal round winner on Friday, in the state semifinals.

Class LL
St. Joseph 56, Ridgefield 37: James Jennings had a game-high 21 points, Timajh Parker scored 11 and Quincy McKnight added 10 as the top-seeded Cadets moved one step closer to defending their state title.

Fairfield Prep 59, New Britain 48: Terry Tarpey's legend continued to grow as the senior recorded 26 points, 13 boards, four assists and seven blocks. Mike Matera contributed 11 points and Tim Butala had 10 for the Jesuits, who are aiming for a second straight trip to the Class LL finals.

Class M
Notre Dame 57, Kaynor Tech 53: Junior Earl Coleman and freshman CJ Davidson each netted 14 points as the Lancers ousted the No. 3 seed and punched their ticket to the state semifinals for a second straight season. Arkel Miles joined the 1,000-point club and Notre Dame used some stifling defense to force 28 turnovers.

Watertown 69, Brookfield 62 (2OT): Ed Hill poured in 30 points, including seven in the extra sessions as the fourth-seeded Indians survived a thriller to reach the state semis. Jon Mitchell had 19 points and Chaz Oates added 14 for Watertown, which closed the second overtime on a 7-0 run starting with two free throws by Mitchell.
