In what could be called a matchup of two of the top rebounders on Long Island, Jordan Williams and Baldwin came out on top of St. John the Baptist and Kyle Williams.

Jordan Williams had 13 points to go along with his 8 rebounds and strong defense to stymie the Cougars, 68-48, in the annual Baldwin Boys Basketball Tournament on Saturday night.

“Last year I was more of a rebounder and defender, and this year I have to step it up and score points,” said Williams.

Jordan was consistent on the offensive side of the ball as he contributed seven points in the first half and followed it up with a six-point effort in the second half. However, his defense against Kyle Williams and the rest of St. John the Baptist (5-3) was present. Kyle was held to 7 points and only grabbed 3 rebounds in the game despite blocking 3 shots.

Baldwin (4-2), however, used a very balanced attack to jump out to a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, which they would maintain throughout much of the first half. Travais Hylton was on fire as he scored 14 of his team-high 15 points in the opening half. Hylton was a major contributor to the 12-2 close out of the first quarter that established the Bruins dominance in the matchup.

St. John the Baptist would attempt to get themselves back in the game with an 8-2 run in the second quarter to cut the lead to nine at 33-24 at the break.

Baldwin would answer the call in the end of the third quarter. The Bruins would all, but extinguish any chances for the Cougars as they rattled off a 10-0 lead that ballooned the lead from 9 to 19 in a matter of minutes.

“We’re a good halfcourt defensive team and if we stop turning the ball over I don’t see why we can’t go far,” Williams said.

Eric Mack also scored in double figures for Baldwin as he finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds, while Elijah McMillan scored 9 points and grabbed 4 boards.

Tavon Ginyard led all scorers with 19 points for the Cougars, he also and a pair of assists and 6 steals in the loss.
