Kinnelon pulls off upset over Randolph

The young Colts of Kinnelon were not intimidated at 10-3 heading into a matchup with the state’s top public program, Randolph, and on Thursday night Thomas Huber made 28 saves en route to a surprise 2-1 win.

“I’m so excited we got the big win,” said Huber. “My defense played so well in front of me and the forwards put the puck in the net. I’m really psyched.”

Brian Gnad netted goal number 13 on the year and in so doing handed the Rams their first loss of the season. Gnad made a nifty play off of a turnover up the middle late in the second and finished on the backhand to give the Colts the needed insurance goal.

The top line of Gnad, Bruce Anderson and Hunter Ledwidth struck for both tallies. The first goal was spawned from a wonderful display of teamwork as Gnad pushed forward and won and offensive draw, while Ledwidth played the puck out from behind the net and Anderson tucked it home.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Gnad. “Number one public team in the state, I think we just came out really strong and stuck to our game plan and it worked well tonight.”

Huber, Anderson and Gnad are all juniors having huge seasons and Ledwidth is playing on every unit for Jeff Myhren as a sophomore, so a huge win like this can have a tremendous impact on this young team’s confidence.

“As long as we play our game, play physical and do what we need to do, we can beat anybody on our schedule,” Huber said. “I’m confident in these guys.”

A Mennen Division championship and a run at a Public B title are starting to seem like more of a possibility with each passing week. These Colts may be young, but they know what it would mean to the history of ice hockey at Kinnelon to make some noise right now.

“Our name’s not up there yet,” Gnad said looking up at the rafters in Mennen Arena. “Hopefully this year. We want that title.”
