Three backs help Dunellen topple Metuchen

METUCHEN, N.J. – With former all-everything running back and multiple school record-holder Rontik Sadler in attendance, the Dunellen Destroyers defeated Metuchen, 48-21, Saturday afternoon.

A new crop of runners lit up the scoreboard for the Destroyers. Vinnie Grausso, Jeff Puckett and Daniel Ditter ran Dunellen’s sing-wing offense to the tune of 200 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

Jeff Pucket not only orchestrated the offensive attack at quarterback, he made two interceptions that led to Destroyer touchdowns. He was the team’s leading rusher with 170 yards on 13 carries and his only pass attempt was for a touchdown.

As if Grausso’s four touchdowns on the ground were not enough, he took the kickoff following Metuchen’s first score 85 yards to the house, leaving the Bulldogs stunned going into half down 28-7.

Grausso, Puckett and Ditter are all seniors playing behind a senior-heavy offensive line. They are a confident bunch and very sound in their system under long-time head coach Dave DeNapoli.

It will be interesting to see if these seniors can get over the hump and take the Central Group 1 title this year.
