No. 31 -- Ryan Norton, Garden City
We begin our countdown with arguably one of the most clutch kickers on Long Island, Garden City’s Ryan Norton.
The Garden City senior made his first and biggest splash under the bright lights of Hofstra University during the Long Island Class II title game.
With the Trojans deadlocked, 6-6 with North Babylon, Garden City coach Tom Flatley made what was an unusual decision and trotted in Norton to attempt a 38-yard field goal – his first ever varsity field goal attempt.
The relatively unknown kicker at the time iced the long-range attempt and the Trojans captured the LIC.
The 2010 season saw Norton in his first full season as the team’s regular kicker, and he’s been as good as a kicker can be. Norton nailed 45-of-48 extra point attempts (one blocked, two at Hofstra – where goal posts five feet narrower than high school).
He also set a school record of 38 attempts made in a row, and was 7-for-8 on field goal attempts, with his long coming in at 40 yards.
His accomplishments earned him a 2010 MSG Varsity All-Metro First team selection.
