HARRISON, N.Y. —The Section 1 Class B playoffs started Thursday and No. 11-seeded Horace Greeley recorded the first upset of the postseason with a convincing 17-4 victory over No. 6-seeded Harrison.

“The girls played so much better than they have all year, they went into it as a new season of one game and they knew they had to win that game,” Greeley coach Annamarie Marasco said. “We had some passion that we haven’t seen all year and everybody bought into the team concept.”

The Quakers were led by Hannah Dunn (four goals) and Marissa Litwak (four goals, two assists) and goalkeeper Sydney Marks made 11 saves in the opening round win. Issy Berkey added three goals and three assists as Greeley dominated on both sides of the ball.

“When we move away from involving everybody and try to focus on one or two players it hasn’t gone to our advantage,” Marasco said of the team effort. “So when the girls saw that they could settle down and have everybody touch the ball they were able to catch the defense at a disadvantage.”

Greeley advances to the quarterfinals where they will travel to No. 3-seeded Brewster on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Brewster bested the Quakers, 17-8, just five days ago on Senior Day and surely Greeley will be looking for a measure of revenge to go along with its hopes of playoff advancement.

“Brewster is a dominant team that plays well and is very patient and physical,” Marasco said. “They have a lot of athletes on the team. It’ll be a big game and we’re looking forward to it.”
