Mary Cain’s legacy as a runner at Bronxville High School, in Section 1, and across New York State, has already been written. If she’s not already the best ever, she’s pretty close to it.

And she still has two years left.

Cain is a national champion, a multi-time state champ, a state track and field athlete of the year, and was a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic track and field trials last month in Oregon.

It’s almost too daunting to attempt to list all of Cain’s accomplishments. To start, the 16-year old phenom ran in the 800 meters in Eugene, Oregon last month, attempting to earn a spot on the U.S. National team at this week’s London Olympics. She barely missed the cut out of the first round.

At the Penn Relays, she set a meet and national record for sophomores of 4:39 in the 400. She won the 1,500 meters in Nationals in the spring. Her time of 4:14.74 was the fastest in the country all year.

In July, Cain qualified for the World Junior Championships in Barcelona where she set the U.S. high school mark in the 1,500.

Cain is a two-time Class B state champion in cross country, and claimed the Federation title in the 1,500 in the spring.
