Despite a couple of injuries, the Bobcats enter the break unbeaten and a slight favorite to win a Gold Ball in Class A. The time off should serve them well.

We got to see what type of resolve this group had on Thursday. The Red Raiders outlasted Albertus Magnus in double overtime thanks to key defensive stops and big contributions off the bench. North Rockland needs game like that early on.

The Red Devils head into the break a confident group and knowing they still have plenty of room to grow. Laron Holt and Musheed Muhammed has tremendous potential as post players and will complement an established backcourt of Ramon Searight, Jay Cabell and Dan Casey.

The Pioneers blew out Frederick Douglass of the Bronx in their final game before the break and seem to be clicking. Poughkeepsie has long been a second half team. Expect them to vie for a No. 1 seed against a Dutchess County-based schedule.

The Huguenots slip out of the No. 2 spot thanks to four straight losses. Two came in Kentucky but the next two, to Manhattan Center and Iona Prep, showed the work they need to do defensively and in their halfcourt offense to seriously contend.

It’s been quite a layoff for South, which will have 14 days off until it plays at Monroe-Woodbury on Friday afternoon. The Vikings should be unbeaten entering January, which is far better than most would have anticipated.

Another team with a lengthy layoff, the Admirals will play three games this week in the Dutchess Holiday Tournament at Lourdes. Few teams are going to be able to contend with the defensive pressure and athleticism that this group has.

The Foxes closed out the month with an important two-point victory at Rye on Friday. Who could have expected a group that lost five starters to be this good? And Fox Lane has plenty of room to grow.

The Bears made a major statement on Friday, knocking off rival Pleasantville at Pace. The win wasn’t a shock. How convincing Briarcliff did it was. Brian Daniels is averaging 17.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.

What a job by the Falcons this week, who went on the road and won at Class AA school White Plains in a game featured on MSG Varsity. Watch the replay and you’ll see a team with plenty of speed and even more potential.

Friday’s setback to Briarcliff continues a rough opening month for a Panthers squad that had high expectations. Jack Eisenberg was terrific. But Pleasantville has to wipe the slate clean at this point. The talent to vie for a title is there.
