Combs, Gaels soccer stars headline Signing Day

The recruitment process can be a difficult tightrope for any high school athlete to tiptoe. Everyone handles the decision of selecting a college differently. But for three seniors at Iona Prep, it was done gracefully, and with an eye towards both where they came from, and where they are going.

All-American Justin Combs made perhaps the biggest splash in the region by signing up to play for UCLA over other serious offers from Virginia and Illinois.

Combs, a defensive back, will be competing in a Pac-12 conference renowned for its high-octane offenses and will surely have a chance to make the kind of eye-catching big plays he became known for in high school.

“It was just great, something I dreamt of as a kid,” said Combs. "Just being recruited and getting mail, speaking with different coaches and being recognized for your talents on and off the field, it was great.”

Iona also sent two soccer players to major programs. Alex Kapp, a senior goaltender and the all-time leader in save-percentage for Iona will be attending Boston College and is looking forward to the rigors of ACC soccer.

“I can’t wait to start a new chapter in my life,” Kapp said. “Going out there and putting on a new uniform and playing for a college is going to be an amazing experience.”

Kapp will be joined at the Division 1 level by forward and all-time leading scorer for Iona Prep, Cesar Ceja. Ceja will suit up for the Marist Red Foxes and is hoping to make a name for himself the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference.

“I’m excited that I’m going to be playing at Marist at a high level, playing a high-pace level of soccer and at a good school academically.” Ceja said.
