Wayne Hills escapes Ramapo in thriller

Wayne Hills and Ramapo never seem to disappoint those in attendance witnessing the North Jersey foes add another chapter in one of the tri-state's best rivalries.

Friday was no different.

Wayne Hills is still perfect following a hard-fought victory in come-from-behind fashion over Ramapo by the score of 31-24 in Wayne.

Cristian Rodriguez rushed for two touchdowns -- including the game winning 36-yarder in the final frame -- as the Patriots narrowly escaped with the win.

Ramapo led at half after the potent combo of Doug Norkett and quarterback Ryan Dougherty connected twice from 55 and 15 yards for the Raiders to make the score 21-10.

The Patriots got to within 21-17 after junior quarterback Kevin Olsen hit Andrew Monaghan from 40 yards out on a beautiful touchdown grab.

Wayne Hills then regained the lead in the third quarter on Rodriguez’s first touchdown from 38 yards out.

Ramapo, which fell to 5-3, tied the game at 24-24 on a 25-yard field goal from Tim Sternfield in the fourth quarter, before Rodriguez notched the game winner to send Wayne Hills to an 8-0 mark.

With this triumph in the rearview mirror, the Patriots now stare at a huge Week 9 matchup with St. Joseph Regional. Regardless of that result, both Wayne Hills and Ramapo are poised to make noise in the upcoming North 1 Group 3 playoffs.
